Vows of Obedience

The vow of obedience is a commitment to listen to God in all circumstances of life. “Listen!” All nature listens and responds in order to survive. Birds migrate, beans sprout, dogs shed, every living thing is sensitive to stirrings in its environment that invite movement and change. In the Christian context, obedience – listening and responding to God – has the goal of discipleship for the individual and the reign of God for the world.

An obedient heart is full of compassion and humility. Obedience requires us to put aside our own agenda in order to hear the truth that the other is and speaks. Sisters of Divine Providence vow obedience as a way to grow as responsive listeners, ever ready to reach out to those in need of God's love. We make a commitment to listen to our community when choosing a direction for our life and service.
